Optimum Nutrition Casein is a protein source which digests slowly - this is the perfect supplement for just before you sleep as your body will break down (and release) the casein over the 8 hours of sleep. Optimum Nutrition Casein is the highest quality casein available and with added Aminogen (see below) you can be sure you are getting the most from your casein supplement. ON Casein is ideal when used with ON Gold Standard Whey in a night and day combination which is used by many top bodybuilders!

Slower Digestion with Optimum Nutrition Casein
Sometimes slower is better - especially when it comes to the rate of protein digestion. While rapid protein absorption is desirable immediately before or after exercise, delayed release is probably more beneficial throughout the remainder of the day.

    Gold Standard Casein
Casein proteins are pH sensitive and gel in the acidic environment of the stomach. As a result, it can take more than twice as long for caseins to be broken-down into their amino acid subcomponents than whey and other proteins. Because of their unique time-released qualities, caseins are aptly described as anti-catabolic or muscle-protecting proteins.

Optimum Nutrition Casein - Beyond The Basics

    • 24 g of Highly Anti-Catabolic MICELLAR CASEIN
    • 10 g of BCAAs, Glutamine, and Glutamine Precursors per Scoop
    • AMINOGEN Enhanced

    What Is Aminogen?
Aminogen, a vital ingredient in high-quality protein supplements, is clinically proven to increase amino acid levels and boost nitrogen retention. Developed by Triarco Industries, Aminogen is a patented, designer enzyme which breaks down protein and improves amino acid absorption.

A natural, plant-derived enzyme, Aminogen is ideal for increasing lean body mass and strength and promoting deep muscle recovery. And Aminogen does all this while supporting protein digestion and reducing or eliminating the gas, bloating and constipation protein can sometimes cause. Get more out of your protein and get bigger, stronger…faster with Aminogen.

Because casein is a slow digesting protein you should use it before you go to bed and use whey protein or a protein blend throughout the day. The amount you should take will vary on your weight but generally one serving provides 24g which should be enough for someone of average build.

A typical ON product, mixes well & tastes great with a strong flavour. I find this tastes better with the less amount of water advised as it can become to watery other wise. This also tastes great with milk but it may depend on your training regime. Casein is a great product to take 30-40 minutes before bed & I really can't fault this one. Like all ON products it tastes great but can be pricey however the taste makes up for it in my opinion.

I won't mention the ingredients because Gavin's review below lists everything. I think it even tells you what plastic the tub is made of and if it is recyclable or not (joke) it's a good review Gavin.

But from looking at the ingredients and protein in this it looks like an excellent bedtime shake. More than enough to see you through the night.

This protein is spot on, it mixes easily and the consistency is excellent, a nice thick smooth shake, just how I like it.

I wasn't overly keen on the vanilla, don't get me wrong, it tastes nice but I am just not a vanilla fan. But I can't take marks off it for that. If this is anything to go by then the chocolate should be one of the best tasting shakes out there.

Another positive is the price. £55 might look steep at first but you get a massive 56 servings.

    O.N YOUR NEXT.......

TASTE: Now this is on another level im using a vanilla blend at mo & its got nothing on this what so ever. O.N have really nailed this its so thick & tasty really is full of flavour i could go through this with a shovel its that nice. You need to just buy the sample sachet ull be in for a right tasty treat. I use to buy this all time in choc supreme thats well nice BUT the vanilla beats it by miles.

MIXABILITY/TEXTURE: As we all know casein is a lot different to mix as its much thicker BUT i would not say i had any troubles here its just a real think shake & mixed in water i had no lumps or any thing i could not mix. I also know this mixes in milk much better than water as well & thats also very nice & the best way to have this is add 150mill water in your shaker then add the casein stir till all mixed in leave in freezer for 45mins then eat it its the way forward totally amazing so what ever way you mix this O.N have top marks here people.

WHAT IS MICHELLAR CASEIN: Micellar Casein is the slowest digesting form of casein. It is separated from milk through an ultrafiltration process. One of Micellar Casein’s unusual properties is its ability to gel during digestion so it can release a steady flow of AMINO ACIDS over many hours.

PROFILE: Again we all know casein is a slow release protein & id say much better source than calcium caseinate & there others michellar casein is much better. We get 10g EAA & over 5g BCAA in this per scoop & nearly 5g of Glutamine & Glutamic acid in every scoop & very low levels of fat, sugar & carbs all sounds good so far im liking this O.N.

OVERALL: I would give this 11/10 for taste all day long as ive said its just gota be tried just for that alone. Now the price £54.99 for 56 servings yeah it seem a little expensive BUT it only works out at about 98p a serving!!! This does come in 3 flavours
Ive not tasted the banana but if its any thing like the other 2 then O.N are not letting us down. Any 1 looking for a tastey night time or saying that this will be good for those who go longer periods of time with no food defo give this a try.

First time trying any of Gold Standard’s products. I’m not really sure why I waited so long? Oh yeah the price….

24g of protein per 32g which isn’t too bad.

Low in fat, carbs and sugars so really this is perfect for any diet anyone is following. It’s relatively low in calories as well. So really you could take this at any time (but of course, optimally before bed to allow a slow release of the protein when you sleep).

Anyways, this tastes delicious. The powder is very fine and dissolved instantly without only a few shakes. I’m not sure if this is common with casein powders as this is my first but the texture was ever so slightly grainy and thick. I'm not sure if this is common with casein shakes but it was interesting. The taste and smell though is absolutely fantastic. I tried this with water but I'm desperate to try it with milk. I seriously think it’ll be lovely.

Good product. If it was a little bit more affordable I would have given it full marks.

I have tried a few ON products before and always really liked their flavouring. This is no exception, the creamy vanilla is without question the best vanilla product I have ever tried.
It is simply beyond compare, so delicious, so creamy, so easy to mix which I find rare with Casein products.
To me it tasted like an ice-cream treat.
How they manage this whilst still being low in carbs and fat is beyond me.
Fantastic product, dear though but when it tastes this good who cares!.
Best Casein to date and my new benchmark product of this kind.

This was the first time trying any vanilla flavoured whey and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. It's also the first time I've tried any "ON Gold Standard" Whey full stop (usually seems too pricey - but look out for offers). The first thing you notice is how fine the powder is. This is unusual for a powder with a good chunk of BCAA's (would be nice to see the breakdown though) and plays well to it's "Gold standard" name. I like the inclusion of the digestive enzymes (Aminogen) and experienced no bloating with the product.

The smell of the powder is rather pleasant and that is maintained when blended with water. It blends very well and produces a nice consistency shake even with a fair amount of water. The taste and texture is very good - the vanilla flavour is almost ice cream like and I could easily have a double. I actually like having a Casein (or blend) shake in the morning after an MCT coffee to keep me going through until lunch (I usually train in the evenings), this fits the bill perfectly. The only real downside is the quite hefty price will keep an eye out for special offers.

Ive always been a big fan of Casein at night because it stops my night time snacking. Casein is grreat for making you feel full and also is a very slow releasing Protein so the muscles will be fed all night preventive Muscle breakdown.
The problem with Casein is its very hard to get the taste right its so much harder than whey to get a good taste, plus this fact this is usually used as a night time protein so you dont want many carbs.
This has 4g of Carbs per serving and 23g of protein just what im looking for in a night time protein.
Ive tried this in the Vanilla and if you are a vanilla fan this is just so dam tasty. It smell lovely and tastes even better they really have got the taste spot on .
    Love this casein. 5/5
    Barry 01/08/2014
The first thing to notice about this protein powder is how it mixes 100% smooth in seconds with just a few shakes. No fork needed and I also had no grid or wire ball in the shaker. Mixes amazingly well for a 100% casein powder.

And another 10/10 for taste. As vanilla shakes go this will take some beating imo. Not too sweet or rich, just right!
For anyone used to drinking whey this slightly thicker shake makes a nice change!

    Macros are:
    Protein 76.2%,
Carbs 9.5% (of which sugars 4.7%)
    Fats 1.4g

This product is a bit pricey (£55.49p for 1.8kgs) but then casein is generally more expensive than whey and if you want a great tasting, great mixing, quality one than this is it! Also comes with added Aminogen! :)

Can I please give this ten stars????
Wow! This is probably the most renown and well-know casein product in the world. The Chocolate Supreme flavour mixed with milk is I feel the nicest tasting protein out there on the market today. It's just so smooth, it's like a little velvet blanket coating your tongue and throat. Heaven!
The smell is nearly as good as the taste too!
It is THE perfect night-time treat as it is a slow-releasing, slow-acting protein.
It is very easy on the gut too with added digestive enzymes and it has a very low sugar and carb ratio.

The best night-time casein product if you want results!
    Drew 15/07/2014
Casein can often be gritty, clumpy, thick and to be blunt - awful. However, Gold Standard 100% Casein is different...

It mixes to a smooth consistency without any real effort, feels just like a whey concentrate and drinks just as easily.

The taste (Chocolate Supreme) is seriously nice, even more so when mixed with milk!!

Optimum Nutrition have really done their homework and used the cream of the crop - micellar casein - instead of the much cheaper Milk Protein and it shows. The added digestive enzymes are a bonus too.

You get what you pay for in life and this is worth EVERY penny...
    Mike, Liverpool 03/12/2010
When you're going to spend 8 hours with no food you need a slow release protein and casein gels in the stomach to release aminos all through the night - Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard is the best out there, no lumps and vanilla is a nice treat pre-bed.

Mix it with milk for a REAL treat!
