Protein Supplements Comparison Chart

It can be difficult to choose a protein supplement if you have to keep on switching between open windows and reading through the manufacturers descriptions. To make things easier we have compiled a list of the proteins we stock and the protein percentage in each one - this is a fairer comparison as the serving sizes vary a lot! Be aware though that the % isn't the "be all and end all" of a protein shake, as there are many other factors to consider. These include what TYPES of protein are in the shake. For example Gaspari Myofusion and Gaspari IntraPro have nearly the same profile on this page but IntraPro uses fast acting whey isolate as its protien source whereas Myofusion uses a slower acting whey concentrate.

In addition some of these protein shakes are blends of different types of protein - Dorian Yates Tempro has 7 different types for a great tapered time-released protein, and Boditronics Midnight Express is designed to take before you go to bed and this is reflected by its choice of micellar casein and egg albumen as the main protein sources. Midnight Express also has added glutamine and HMB to further aid night-time recovery - these added ingredients will obviously lower the protein percentage of the shake as a whole, but add to the value of the product for its designed purpose.

We have also added a couple of meal-replacement style shakes at the bottom of the table to help you make a decision if you are looking for something to replace a small meal which has some carbs as well as protein.

Protein Types
While the chart above is a good quick at-a-glance guide to choosing your protein supplements I would like to take the time to explain why you might choose a different protein supplement over another because of its speed of absorption. I will illustrate this with an example - Reflex Peptide Fusion and Reflex Instant Whey - at a glance of the table above you might see Instant Whey at 80% protein and Peptide Fusion at 78% and choose Instant Whey without reading into the product text.

However Peptide Fusion is a blend of whey, egg white and micellar casein which means that the protein release is sustained over a period of around 4 hours - note though that this depends on what you eat before and after taking it, and could be shorter or longer based on this. In contrast Instant Whey (also from Reflex Nutrition) is a fast acting protein and once again ignoring other factors such as what you eat with it this will be released over the course of up to 2 hours - this makes it ideal for a protein supplement to take upon waking in the morning, and after a workout, however you may be better off choosing Peptide Fusion if you are planning on taking your protein shake as a low carb meal replacement inbetween meals.

Hopefully this short explanation has illustrated the point that there is often more to a protein supplement than just the protein percentage!
