PhD Nutrition Diet Whey (2kg)

PhD Nutrition Diet Whey is one of Echo Supplements and PhD's most popular products across the entire supplement range. Diet Whey is suitable as both a meal replacement shake and also to replace your typical protein shake if looking to add some great fat loss ingredients to your daily diet without having to think about it - this is because of the great macronutrient breakdown of protein, carbohydrates and fats.

First of all Diet Whey (assuming a 50g serving size) provides a generous 34g of muscle building protein which is rich in the important branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). Next up is 5.5g of carbohydrate in the form of waxy barley flour - this is the same carbohydrate that you find in PhD Nutrition Waxy Vol, and is a slow burning carbohydrate - meaning it will keep you fuller for longer. Finally making up the fat component of Diet Whey is flaxseed and CLA - two really great ingredients which should find a place in any healthy weight loss diet.

This is the 2kg sized tub which provides 40 servings at 50g each or 80 servings if you opt for a single scoop (25g - 91 calorie) serving instead. If you're looking to get the best value for money then this is the best size to go for - if you'd like to try a new flavour then there is also a Diet Whey 1kg pouch size available.

Diet Whey is suitable as both a meal replacement shake and also to replace your typical protein shake if looking to add some great fat loss ingredients to your daily diet without having to think about it - this is because of the great macronutrient breakdown of protein, carbohydrates and fats.

    PhD Diet Whey Key Facts

As well as the macronutrient profile being perfect PhD have added a few fat loss ingredients to Diet Whey to maximise weight loss over a longer time period. These are green tea, CLA and L-Carnitine - you will see these in many standalone supplements because they are the safest, most reliable ingredients and taking them in the doses found in Diet Whey alongside a suitable diet will result in increased fat loss over time.

PhD Diet Whey comes in a HUGE variety of sizes and flavours - Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla, Banana, Choc Mint, Choc Peanut, Cherry Bakewell, Chocolate Orange and White Chocolate - at Echo we're big fans of the Vanilla flavour but the Choc Orange is a close second when we want a sweet drink during the day!

    Key Benefits

    • Low Sugar - When you are dieting to achieve a fat loss goal (as you probably are if buying Diet Whey!) then keeping your sugar intake low is key, and PhD Diet Whey supports you in this goal as there is only around 1g sugar in a serving!
    • Acetyl L-Carnitine - L-Carnitine is one of the most important weight management ingredients on the market, and works by transporting fat into the cells for use as energy (rather than stored as fat) and by including the Acetyl form PhD have included the best type; it is more efficient than regular L-Carnitine and has a dual effect by crossing the "blood/brain barrier" to help inprove mental focus
    • High in BCAA - The branched chain amino acids (BCAA) are responsible for kick starting the muscle repair process and with over 3000mg BCAA per serving, PhD Diet Whey will help ensure you don't lose muscle while on a strict diet
    • Green Tea Extract - PhD Nutrition have included a very strong 50% polyphenols green tea extract in the Lean Degree formula; as this is the avtive ingredient which is helping you lose fat you want this to be as high as possible
    • CLA - The number 1 non-stimulant fat loss ingredient, CLA has research behind it showing that it helps to increase lean muscle mass at the same time as lower body fat levels - truly the "holy grail" fat loss ingredient!
    • With Flaxseed - Flaxseed is a tremendous source of Omega 3 fatty acids which are essential for the health of a huge variety of body organs & it is normally not a part of most diets. A great inclusion for your health in the Diet Whey formula in our opinion
    • Low Calorie - The KEY part of any fat loss diet is to be in a calorie deficit - without this NOTHING else can work! So it's great to see that PhD Diet Whey comes in at under 100 calories per serving which you can expect to keep you full for around 1-2 hours. PhD Diet Whey keeps hunger at bay at the same time as helping muscle repair!
    • Double Up - PhD Diet Whey is versatile enough that you can double up the serving size and while this will of course double the calories, it can allow you to actually replace a full small meal to aid weight loss

My missus already uses this (I think she seen the word diet and bought it lol) but I was meaning to try it out. In the meantime I got a sample of the Strawberry Delight flavour and was very pleasantly surprised. Strawberry shakes are my favourite flavour and this one is very tasty, thin and easy to drink. Protein is from whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate and some soy protein isolate. It's 68% protein. 11g of carbs of which 5g are sugars, and 5.5g fat. Per 100g there's also 1g CLA, 0.5g Acetyl L-Carnitine and 400mg of Green Tea Extract added. A negligible amount of flaxseed (1.2g) is also added. Should be more really if bothering to add it. Almost £20 a kg which is about right for similar products on the market and again taste is definitely a winner here!

Pretty well priced considering what you get. Very competitive.

I do enjoy the phD marketing and packaging. It’s very clean, quite scientific (in a sense) and straight to the point. No grenades, no bullets, no gimmicks!

I opted for the Belgian Chocolate flavour as it sounded delicious (we’ll come back to this..)

Worryingly whey protein concentrate: 27%, milk protein concentrate: 26% which leaves 47% of the protein made with Soy? I really wish manufactures would stop using this inferior protein. It’s not ideal.

Other notable additions would be CLA (which really isn’t fully proven) Flaxseed and Green Tea Extract, both which are very beneficial while dieting and losing fat and ALCAR which is also very good to see. ALCAR is a very strong supplement that has many beneficial effects (weight loss being just one of them).

Taste wasn’t great to be honest. I found it very grainy and earthy. It was if someone poured 100g of grounded oats into my shake. I actually had to read the ingredients again as I was sure it had more (30g at least) of oats/CHOs added.

I can see what phD were trying here but I think it just misses the mark.

Good range of fat loss ingredients,CLA,green tea flaxseed with some barley for carbs. Protein comes in at 34g a serving and from a blend of whey concentrate and milk(casein and soy). Added to this are BCAA's.
It mixes well with no bits, although vanilla with water was quite watery. With milk would have made this a lot tastier.
Overall,a good product to give you the protein you need through the day wit added fat loss aids. Priced at £1 a serving it's decent value too.

The PHD range comes in very professional looking packaging and it's refreshing to see a branded protein blend which actually states the levels of each type of protein "whey protein concentrate* (27%), milk protein concentrate* (26%) (of which 56% is micellar casein), soy protein isolate". It's a decent makeup although I would favour less soy (nothing wrong with soy, but would prefer to see more casein or egg in a "diet" blend).
The Strawberry delight smells quite nice and mixes unusually well with milk....apart from some brown bits which appear to be flax seeds. Perhaps the batch I got was not ground particularly well, or if it's supposed to come like that then it could be a little off-putting to some. The Green tea and L-carnitie are nice additions although higher levels of the latter would have been good. It's also nice to see a diet blend which does have "some" added carbs. They probably could have got away with a little more, but at least there is more than just protein to help with satiety. Perhaps the addition of MCT (or in place of the CLA) would have set this apart from some others. The taste was fine whilst drinking, but left a rather nasty after-taste......somewhat chemically, will go for the chocolate next time. At £1 a serving it's pretty decent value.

I really enjoyed the Belgian Chocolate flavour, such a top-quality taste, I always enjoy protein shakes that actually taste of what they say on the pack.
This is a weight-loss protein with added CLA, L-Carnitine, Flaxseed and Green Tea to help aid that fat-burn! The shake when mixed with water is very dense and creamy and I couldn't see any 'bits' in it at all. I know some people will pull their faces at there being 'Soya Protein Isolate' in there but overall I think that this is a fantastic protein if fat-loss and adding lean muscle are your goals!
PhD are a much-proven company who make high quality products, and, as always you'll be getting a fantastic price/deal from Echo!

    PhD Diet Whey

I have always liked PhD proteins and having just tried a sample this one is no exception.

Diet Whey has 34g of protein, 5.5g of carbs and 2.75g of fat.
It has protein blend of Whey Concrntrate, Milk protein Concentrate and Soya Protein isolate with added l-carnitine, flaxseed and green trea extract. This is an ideal lean muscle building shake.

I had the Belgian Chocolate flavour and I thought it was awesome. One of if not the the best tasting chocolate protein I have tried.

The only negative is I found it slightly harder to mix than other proteins. It was slightly grainy but it tasted that nice I wasn't bothered, I just wanted another one.

Profile is not bad - far from keen on soy but as an addition under the others, it isn't the end of the world!

Additions to make it "diet" are reasonably solid too, can't complain and those looking for an extra boost will be grateful. Diet whey is always a tough one to review, as I'm not a fan of adding things in and calling it diet, but as a blend of protein and a few added ingredients, not bad.

Thick, and filling with 350 mls, as directed. Felt like I had taken in something substantial and kept me going.

Flavour - Belgian chocolate - tasted a bit odd to me, mildly chocolate-y, a bit malty and a bit coconutty, but not as I would expect a chocolate flavour to taste. Not unpleasant, but not nice.

3.5 overall for me, taste is subjective and on the other markers it does a fairly good job.

I tried the strawberry delight phd diey whey.
Very impressed with this product altogether, amazing taste, really fresh and fruity. Mixed very easily too it was a pleasure to drink, somewhat of a treat.
The profile of this product is very impressive to, the added fat burning agents in this product makes it a very good choice for those trimming back.
The 2kg tub is very fairly priced also at just under £40.
I would recommend this without hesitation.

I like this. Taste is very nice and I like the oaty taste from the barley, also gives the feeling have have something a bit more substantial. Mixed fine although very slightly bitty, but not a problem.
Good range of ingredients, blend of proteins with flaxseed,CLA and green for fat loss and good fat.
Overall a good product at a decent price.

As far as diet whey's go, you're going to struggle to beat this for an ingredient profile...

Plus points: Multi blend protein source. 34g protein per serving. CLA, L-Carnitine, Green Tea Extract and Flaxseed all aid in bodyfat loss. Sweetened with Sucralose.

Negatives: Soy isolate. 5.5g carbs per serving is slightly higher than rivals. The flavour (Belgian Chocolate) was awful, it tasted more like coconut (Which I guess is a plus if you like coconut!).
